Matter: Cynara cardunculus var. scolymus. Also known as a “artichoke”. This particular “artichoke” was uncooked. 
Taste: Bitter. Texture was fibrous. Outside was sharp on the leave edges, but smooth otherwise. Inside was filled with hundreds of small, needle like, juvenile leaves. 
Unpleasant.
